Over the years of experience, Leonardo and Clariana have always seen that Children need to be protected.
However, when Leonardo and Clariana began to work directly with children, this conviction was deepened even further.
In 2018, Leonardo and Clariana were offered an opportunity to work together to provide mental health services to children and families in their homes in the Boston area, particularly immigrant and vulnerable families.
Weekly, for almost 4 years, Leonardo and Clariana visited children in their respective families (In-Home Therapy) and, due to these weekly visits to different families, they witnessed several sad situations of abuse, neglect, terrible stories of child abuse that it wouldn’t even be useful to share because they are so sad.
Based on this work together, Leonardo and Clariana decided to create Amare in 2019, as they identified that the sense of urgency is enormous and comprehensive actions to protect children need to be taken quickly.
Initially Leonardo and Clariana began to offer knowledge on best parenting practices for parents and couples, but intermittently.
In 2021, Leonardo graduated in Mental Health from Cambridge College and began designing other more systemic products and solutions. Clariana invested more in the academic area, mainly in the development of research in low-middle-income countries regarding parental mental health, child development and parenting practices.
Currently, Leonardo and Clariana have focused on structuring Amare’s way of operating and creating solutions and services to guarantee child protection in Brazil.
In 2023, Amare’s first product was launched for hospitals, schools and NGOs “Preventing Child Abuse”. And we dream that all schools and hospitals offer a minimum of Mistreatment Prevention training for their employees.
Amare is in its initial phase and we really want to improve the quality of life of children around the world through our solutions.
Everything we do is governed by the following beliefs and values:
We believe in the window of opportunity that exists in early childhood because the best environment for a child to develop and become a healthy adult is at home with mature and healthy parents.
Investing in family relationships and institutions for better child development.
Children becoming healthy and stable adults.
Now we share with you an experience that drove us to create Amare.
Below, you will read a letter from a 10-year-old child who was our patient a few years ago (This child witnessed her father abuse her little sister who was a little older than her multiple times)
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. – REHEARSAL
Martin Luther King stood up against racism and wanted equality and fair treatment for African Americans. Martin Luther King held non-violent marches.
He was a leader of the Civil Rights movement and made many important changes. I decided to stand up for what was right. I defended a 3-month-old baby in foster care.
A social worker was preparing to take her to another home. I told the social worker, “What you are doing to this baby is wrong. She’s bouncing from house to house, just like me. She doesn’t deserve this.” The social worker said, “I know, but I don’t make all the decisions.” She took the baby and left. I remembered how scared I felt when I moved constantly. I believe the panacea for foster care is that parents should have to go to parenting classes before having children. High school students should take good parenting classes before they graduate.
They need these classes just like all kids have to go to high school before going to college. Parenting classes should be taken before people have children. If you have children first, you may have already ruined your children’s lives. You really need to know how to be a good father. Everyone watches television, and there should be advertisements showing people how to be good parents. That would help a lot. Social workers should talk to foster children to see what changes we think should be made. Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, and many other people made changes to help African Americans, and I want to make changes for all children. Children deserve a wonderful life!
