Adults who suffered violence (physical, sexual and emotional) as children have:

  • 7x more likely to be involved in interpersonal violence as a victim or aggressor;
  • 30x more likely to attempt suicide;
  • 14x (for men) more likely to commit physical and sexual violence against an intimate partner;
  • 16x (for women) more likely to suffer physical and sexual violence from an intimate partner;
  • Children aged between 11 and 15 years old who are bullied during school are 13% less likely to graduate from school;

According to the Núcleo Ciência Pela Infância (NCPI), it is estimated that data on Violence against children may be under-registered and under-reported and, therefore, may be worse than official records.

Throughout their lives, children exposed to violence are at greater risk of developing psychological illnesses such as anxiety disorders; engage in harmful behavior such as alcohol and drug abuse, smoking and unsafe sex; chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease; infectious diseases such as HIV; and social problems, including low education, violent behavior and crime.
